Beads of Courage has a wonderful program that most, if not all lampworkers become familiar with along the path of their artistic endeavors. "The Program is a resilience-based intervention designed to support and strengthen the protective resources in children coping with serious illness."
My God! You have no idea! These children put me to shame whenever I see them.
I help treat children at my hospital - they are so incredibly resilient, so strong, so brave... so fragile. I've often wished that there were a law against children getting seriously ill, but since there isn't we do what we can to ease them through it.
Beads help. They really do. (We don't have the Beads of Courage program at my hospital yet, although I keep talking to the pediatric doctors and I think they're sick of it now because they're finally going to the Child-Life people to talk to them.) One of the nearby hospitals has the program and I'll periodically stop by & talk to the kiddos.
Do you have any idea how amazing it is to hear a small, fragile child waiting for a miracle say "But I can't give up! Sue has three more purple hearts than I do, and I don't have my next green bead yet!"
I went home and made purple hearts and green beads.
Having given a little background on why these children and this Program touch me so, let me get to the heart of the glass...
I have frits that need testing.
